SEVERAL people have died in separate road accidents across Namibia over the weekend, with crashes reported in the Omusati, //Kharas, Khomas, Hardap and Oshana regions.
According to the Namibian Police weekend crime report, the accidents claimed multiple lives, including police officers, and left several others injured.
In the //Kharas Region, two police officers died in a crash on the C-13 road between Aus and Rosh Pinah on Friday evening. Sergeant (2) Ndondji Stephanus Mandjoni, 29, and Constable Conny Petrus were killed when a police Toyota GD-6 overturned after the driver allegedly lost control. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken to Oranjemund Private Hospital.
In Okongo, a 26-year-old man, identified as Haukena Mateus Lomboleni, died on Friday morning after losing control of his Honda Fit on the Okongo–Mpungu main road near Oshalumbu village. Police said the vehicle left the road and struck a tree. He was the only occupant and died at the scene.
A separate crash in Katutura, Windhoek, claimed the life of a Suzuki sedan driver after a collision with a Range Rover on Independence Avenue near People’s Primary School. Police said the Suzuki overturned several times after being struck on the passenger side. The driver died upon arrival at Katutura State Hospital, while two adult passengers and a three-year-old child sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
In the Hardap Region, 58-year-old Petrus Willem Van Wyk died after losing control of his Isuzu single-cab on the D1259 gravel road between Rehoboth and Schlip. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, in Oshakati, a 30-year-old man died after a Toyota pickup crashed near Fachas Bar in Uupindi. Police said the vehicle hit a pavement before landing in a water channel, causing occupants to be thrown from the vehicle. The driver allegedly fled the scene but was later arrested about 600 metres away. Other passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries.
Police investigations into all the accidents are ongoing.
