TWO suspects have been arrested and a third remains at large after an incident of theft in Keetmanshoop escalated into attempted murder when a security officer fired rubber bullets to stop a getaway vehicle on Saturday.
According to NamPol’s weekend crime report, the incident occurred at around 12:30 at Old Mutual Mall. A 30-year-old male driver and a 46-year-old female were arrested, while another female suspect fled into the crowd.
Police said a guard from Southern Security who was on duty at the mall was alerted by a store manager about a female suspect removing security tags from merchandise. The guard followed the suspect to the parking area, where a black Volkswagen Polo with three occupants was waiting.
The guard approached and attempted to block the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop.
The guard then discharged three rubber bullets — one into the air and two aimed at the left side of the vehicle — smashing the driver’s window and rear windows.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped. One female suspect fled the scene and has not been arrested.
The male driver was found in possession of a licensed pistol, which was not discharged during the incident.
A search of the vehicle recovered clothing items with price tags from Pep Stores, Clicks and Dunns, together valued at about N$7,070.
The Volkswagen Polo was seized.
The suspects face charges of theft and attempted murder.
