Capital receives heavy rainfall over long weekend

WINDHOEK received a great deal of rain during the Independence long weekend, resulting in the flooding of certain streets and roads in the city.

Many of the city’s residents shared photos of the flooded streets on social media warning others to stay clear of these roads in an effort to prevent accidents.

“Avoid the bridge near Grove Mall,” one person tweeted on Monday, sharing a photo of the flooded road near the Mall. Another shared a photo of a flooded street in the Klein Windhoek area, along with photos showing the damage the rain caused to a building in that area.

Fortunately, the rain did not only come with floods and property damage. Countless people also shared photos of the scenic cloudy skies and green fields to express their appreciation for the rain and all the beauty that came with it.

This appreciation did not only come from Namibians, but also from tourists.

“This is my first-ever visit to Namibia and I expected desert conditions. What a surprise to find everything lush and green in the capital, Windhoek. Apparently, they had lots and lots of rain,” a Facebook user stated, sharing photos of the green city.

According to Namibia Meteorological Services, Windhoek recorded 31,4 mm of rain by Tuesday morning. Many other places in the Khomas region also received significant rainfall during the weekend. Omateva recorded 17 mm of rain by Monday and Claratal farm recorded 6,8 mm by Tuesday.

Many other regions also received considerable rainfall during the weekend. Grootfontein, in the Otjozondjupa region, recorded the highest rainfall of 47,6 mm on Tuesday, a significant increase from Monday’s 1,4 mm. The previous day’s highest rainfall was 21,5 mm recorded at Okaukuejo Etosha National Park.

In the Kunene region, Outjo recorded 24,4 mm and Konop Pos recorded 18,1 mm on Tuesday.
Oshikango and Eenhana in the Ohangwena region recorded 21,4 mm and 15,1 mm of rainfall respectively.

Namibia Meteorological Services stated that scattered, widespread thundershowers should be expected in the Kunene and Erongo regions this week. These thundershowers are expected to spread to the Otjozondjupa and the Khomas regions by Thursday. The public is therefore advised to take precautions.
