FOOTBALL fans from around the world are preparing for a historic FIFA World Cup 2026 final as Spain and defending champions Argentina meet in a heavyweight clash at the New Jersey Stadium on Sunday night, with supporters set to witness a battle between two footballing giants and a potential final chapter in Lionel Messi’s World Cup journey.
The final, scheduled for 21:00 Namibia time, will see European champions Spain face South American champions Argentina in the 104th match of the tournament, with thousands of fans expected to fill the 80,663-capacity stadium for the biggest game in world football.
For many supporters, the occasion carries added significance as Messi leads Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final. The Albiceleste captain, who has scored eight goals in this tournament and 21 across his World Cup career, will be aiming to guide his country to another title after their triumph in Qatar 2022.
Argentina have endured a dramatic route to the final, producing several thrilling comeback victories along the way. After winning all three of their group-stage matches, they survived a late fightback from Cabo Verde in extra time, overcame Egypt 3-2 after trailing 2-0 in the Round of 16, defeated Switzerland in extra time and produced another comeback against England in the semi-finals.
Spain, meanwhile, have impressed with their disciplined possession-based style and defensive strength. La Roja reached the final after a commanding 2-0 semi-final victory over France, controlling the match through patient build-up play and clinical finishing.
The Spanish side topped Group H before overcoming Austria, Portugal and Belgium in the knockout stages. Their only goal conceded in the tournament came during their 2-1 quarter-final win over Belgium.
Sunday’s final will mark Spain’s first World Cup final appearance since winning their only title in 2010, while Argentina will compete in their seventh final and their second in succession.
The match will also feature the first-ever FIFA World Cup final half-time show, combining football, music and social impact. The event will feature performances from Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira and BTS, with artistic direction from Coldplay’s Chris Martin and production by Global Citizen.
Spain are expected to line up with Simon in goal; Pedro Porro, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Cucurella in defence; Rodri and Fabian Ruiz in midfield; and Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal in attack.
Argentina’s likely starting XI includes Emiliano Martinez; Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martinez and Nicolas Tagliafico; Leandro Paredes, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Giuliano Simeone; with Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez leading the attack.
The final will take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium, the largest stadium in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area and has a seating capacity of 80,663.
The stadium has already hosted seven matches during the 2026 World Cup, including five group-stage fixtures, France’s 3-0 win over Sweden in the Round of 32 and Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16.
Now, with fans from across the globe gathering for the final match of the tournament, the stadium will host the ultimate showdown as Spain and Argentina battle for football’s most coveted trophy.
