THE flood-prone northern regions of Namibia might face flooding of a magnitude last seen two decades ago, with sources in the southern Cunene province of Angola reporting a huge mass of water flowing towards the Namibia-Angola border following several days of torrential rains in the Civelai catchment area.
Speaking to Informanté, a resident of Ondjiva, the seat of the provincial government, said that it has been raining incessantly for the past five days and that water streams are overflowing their banks. “A large mass of water is flowing southwards,” she said.
Meanwhile, Senior Hydrologist in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Leonard Hango, said that a number of water streams in the northern regions are already active following recent downpours.
He is urging residents to stay alert and be ready for any eventuality.
Floodwater from Angola—well known as Efundja—caused havoc in the northern regions of Namibia in 2008 and 2009, forcing schools to close, destroying roads, and displacing thousands of inhabitants in low-lying rural areas and informal settlements.
