Medipark acquire surgical navigation system

MEDIPARK Ongwediva has, on Thursday, performed its first-ever operation using a state-of-the-art surgical navigation system.

The surgical navigation system can be used in procedures such as brain, spinal cord, and Ears, Nose, and Throat (ENT) operations.

Medipark is currently the only hospital with the multi-purpose navigation machine which has three functioning purposes.

Doctor Marcel Ndayishyigikiye, a Neurosurgeon, said that the neu-navigation machine is a machine that guides them when doing procedures on brains and the spinal cord.

A surgical navigation system is an image-guided intra-operative localization system, whose main function is to provide the surgeon with real-time feedback on the location of the surgical instrument in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

Ndayishyigikiye indicated that as of Thursday, they had three scheduled operations for the day, but on a monthly basis, they do up to 25 surgeries.

“With the new system in place, it will help keep the normal structure of the brain in place, and it is safe to use,” he said.

He added that it will also produce better outcomes and make operations faster.

Ndayishyigikiye indicated that the acquisition of the navigation machine is a significant investment by Medipark for the benefit of the people.

He emphasized that Medipark’s focus is on the patients, and everything they do is for the patients’ benefit.
