Man “wins” N$30,000 then loses N$4,500 in latest prize scam

Staff Reporter

A MALE resident of Etanga Village in the Epupa Constituency of the Kunene Region has fallen victim to the now-familiar “you’ve won a prize” phone scam — a recurring fraud across the country.

On Saturday, at around 10:30, the 59-year-old man received a call from someone pretending to be an MTC employee based in Windhoek, according to the police.

The caller allegedly told the complainant that he had won N$30,000 for regularly recharging his cellphone. To facilitate the processing of the prize, he was asked for the numbers on the back of his bank card, which he provided.

Shortly afterwards, he began receiving OTP notifications.

An amount of N$4,500 was withdrawn from his account.
