A 19-YEAR-OLD man from Klein Windhoek was allegedly defrauded of gaming equipment valued at N$11,000 after falling victim to a fake bank notification scam on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, the complainant had advertised items for sale on Facebook when a male suspect contacted him by phone and agreed to purchase the goods.
The suspect arranged for a Yango driver to collect the items and claimed that payment of N$11,000 would be made via internet banking from Bank Windhoek.
The complainant then received an SMS notification from the number (92222) confirming receipt of the amount.
Relying on the message, he handed the items — one Xbox Series S, two controllers and gaming headsets — to the Yango driver.
However, when he tried to withdraw the money at an ATM, the transaction failed. On checking with Bank Windhoek, he was informed that “92222” is not an official bank number and that he had been scammed.
The stolen items have not been recovered, and no arrest has been made.
