Omusati police chief urges professionalism as 86 new constables report for duty

Staff Reporter

MEMBERS of the Namibian Police Force are expected to conduct themselves professionally, both on and off duty, said Omusati Regional Commander Commissioner Ismael Basson.

Addressing 86 newly trained police constables deployed to the region following their graduation last month, Basson reminded them that while police officers may detain suspects in the course of duty, they must always do so lawfully and without resorting to assault or abuse.

He urged the recruits to report for duty on time, uphold the police mandate, and serve all Namibians professionally and without favour.

Only six of the 86 recruits are originally from Omusati.

They are part of 1,380 police cadets who completed training at the Ruben Danger Ashipala and Simon Mutumba training centres. The cadets graduated at a ceremony held in Oshakati last month.

Basson also called on senior officers and supervisors to support and mentor the newly deployed constables. He urged experienced members to treat the recruits with respect and professionalism despite differences in rank.

“They are your colleagues,” he said. “Guide them, support them and help them grow into capable police officers.”

The number of newly trained officers in Omusati will soon increase from 86 to 149 when 63 additional cadet constables, who recently graduated in the Omaheke Region, are deployed to the region.
