Otjiwarongo Police under probe for assault of school boys

Staff Reporter

A CASE of common assault was opened yesterday by a 19-year-old at the Otjiwarongo police station after a group of schoolboys were allegedly rounded up and beaten by police officers.

It is alleged that the police were summoned to Karundu Secondary School after a case of a missing cellphone was reported, and that some of the male learners were subsequently loaded into police vans and driven away, where they were allegedly assaulted by the officers. It is further alleged that some of the victims suffered broken ribs, knee injuries, and sustained wounds that made urination difficult.

Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, giving an update on the matter, said that the 19-year-old who opened the case alleges that on Monday, 16 February 2026, between 08:00 and 12:00, on the gravel road behind Indongo Toyota in Otjiwarongo, police officers (number not mentioned) allegedly went to Karundu Secondary School, loaded the learners, took them to that place, and allegedly beat them with sticks and belts.

Shikwambi said that the police did not provide reasons for the beatings.

“However, an investigation by our Police Conduct and Investigation Directorate has been launched. No one has been arrested as the suspects are unknown at this stage. An identification parade will be held for the complainant to be able to identify the alleged officers. Investigations continue,” Shikwambi said.
