Omeva Consulting, in collaboration with the University of Namibia, invites participants to a one-week practical course titled “Genomics for Smarter Breeding in Drylands,” taking place from 27–31 October 2025 at UNAM’s Neudamm Campus.
The course focuses on how bioinformatics and data science can transform breeding strategies and enhance livestock resilience in arid and semi-arid regions. Participants will gain hands-on experience in population genomics, climate-smart breeding, and data-driven livestock
improvement.
An international team of experts will guide the sessions:
- Dr Carlos Sarabia (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain) – Population geneticist specialising in molecular biology and bioinformatics.
- Noelle Curtis-Joseph (Brown University, USA) – Computational biologist applying machine learning to microbiome-driven traits.
- Prof Theopoline Amushendje (University of Namibia) – Molecular geneticist and Academic Coordinator of the Centre of Excellence for Research in Agricultural Productivity.
- María Luisa de la Puerta Fernandez (Omeva Consulting) – Data analyst focused on integrating AI and ICT into sustainable livestock systems.
The course is free of charge, made possible through the support of the Ramón Areces Foundation, ACESDA, AECID, and the Spanish Embassy in Namibia.
Participation is limited to 30 candidates, and early application is encouraged. Applicants should have prior knowledge of genetics.
