THE City of Windhoek has warned the public to desist from social gatherings at cemeteries after an incident wherein a family hosted a party at the Pioneerspark’s Gammams Cemetery after a burial.
“The City of Windhoek reminds the public that cemeteries are sacred spaces reserved only for burials and remembrance of the deceased. Social gatherings, alcohol consumption, and littering within cemetery grounds are strictly prohibited,” Lydia Amutenya, Public Relations Officer within the City of Windhoek said.
She added that the reminder follows a recent incident at Gammams Cemetery in Pioneerspark, where mourners were reported to have hosted a social gathering after a burial.
“The incident, widely circulated on social media, showed seating arrangements, cooler boxes, and alcohol within the cemetery. City officials also discovered large amounts of litter, including bottles and cans, scattered across graves and walkways. Such behaviour is unacceptable, as it disrespects the dignity of the deceased, disturbs other grieving families, and undermines the solemn atmosphere of cemeteries,” Amutenya said.
She thus reminded residents that cemeteries are reserved for burials and that any form of social gathering, consumption of alcohol, or celebration after burials within cemetery grounds is strictly prohibited.
Amutenya added that leaving litter, bottles, or any waste behind is an offense and will not be tolerated.
“The City has a duty to safeguard the integrity of cemeteries and the rights of bereaved families. Strict monitoring and enforcement will continue to ensure cemeteries remain a place of peace, reverence, and dignity,” Amutenya said.
