Namibia on alert as Angola continues to grapple with Cholera

Staff Reporter

Namibia’s northern neighbour, Angola, continues to grapple with a cholera epidemic, which has now spread to 17 of the country’s 21 provinces.

In Namibia, a case of cholera was detected and confirmed in the Kunene Region last month. It was the country’s first case of cholera in more than ten years.

The Angolan media reports that the epidemic is spreading rapidly, with 420 infections and 20 fatalities reported over the past 48 hours, increasing the total number since the epidemic began to 12,368 infections and 473 deaths.

About 1,230 cholera patients are currently hospitalized.

As a precautionary measure, Namibia has since implemented body temperature checks at entry points on the northern border to detect potential infectious diseases.

Cholera is an infection of the small intestine. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle cramps.
