THE construction of the much-anticipated 17-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital is proceeding according to plan.
This was revealed by the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Ruben Kanime, during the inauguration of the hospital’s Sustainable Vision Centre on Monday. He said that the project, which started last year in August and is being constructed at an amount of over N$26.4 million is currently 30% complete.
According to Kanime, the development of the ICU is a crucial step in enhancing the hospital’s capacity to provide critical care services to residents of the Oshana Region and surrounding areas.

He indicated that the new facility will significantly improve access to life-saving treatment for patients requiring intensive medical attention.
“We are pleased to announce that the construction of the 17-bed ICU facility is progressing well,” he said.
He added that they are on track to meet their projected completion date of December 2025.
Kanime explained that the hospital has reviewed its staff establishment to create a structure that is responsive to current needs. Additionally, they are continuously training doctors and nurses in specialized areas.
He said that the facility will be equipped with modern ICU beds, ventilators, and other essential accessories required for critical care. It will also include additional dialysis beds for patients who cannot be treated in a normal dialysis unit.
Furthermore, Kanime said that the hospital has recruited 40 doctors, as well as 52 registered nurses and 47 enrolled nurses, during the current financial year.
