TransNamib’s spokesperson, Abigail Raubenheimer, has announced that no train movement will take place on affected lines in Usakos until they are deemed safe for operation.
This follows heavy rainfall over the weekend, which damaged the railway line in Usakos, washing away part of its supporting infrastructure and rendering it unsafe for rail operations.
“Our civil engineering teams have been deployed immediately to assess and repair the affected areas, working tirelessly to restore operations while ensuring minimal disruption to freight services. However, TransNamib remains committed to prioritising safety above all else, and no train movement will take place on affected lines until they have been fully inspected and deemed safe for operation. The line between Arandis and Usakos was re-opened yesterday afternoon, following the quick response by our engineering team to repair the line, but with more rain expected we will continue to closely monitor the situation,” Raubenheimer said.
She assured that TransNamib has intensified rail inspections, with increased monitoring of vulnerable areas along the network due to the impact of the current rainfall season.
“Additionally, our train crews have been placed on high alert to detect and report any potential damages to the railway infrastructure. These proactive measures are part of our commitment to ensuring the safe and reliable movement of goods across Namibia. TransNamib appreciates the patience and cooperation of its customers and stakeholders during this time,” Raubenheimer added.
