Weekend sees widespread rain, with Usakos significantly affected

Staff Reporter

This weekend was characterised by widespread rainfall, with some of the heaviest showers concentrated in the Erongo Region.

Usakos in the Erongo Region was among the areas that experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall. The downpour left the town’s streets flooded, while the railway line sustained significant damage, with part of its support structure washed away. In response to the intense weather in the western town, the Usakos Town Council has urged the public to remain cautious.

“During the week, we received excessive rains and thunderstorms, and more rain is expected. Keep children away from rivers and pools of water, and park your vehicles under shelter during thunderstorms for safety in these extreme weather conditions. Do not attempt to cross a flowing river by vehicle or on foot. Keep emergency contact numbers close at hand,” the council advised.

Usakos was not the only place in the Erongo Region affected by heavy storms this weekend. Omaruru and Arandis also recorded rainfall. Beyond the Erongo Region, several other areas also experienced rain, including Ongwediva, Eenhana, Khorixas, and Outjo in the north, as well as Keetmanshoop in the south.

More rainfall is expected today and tomorrow. According to Namibia Meteorological Services, moderate to heavy thundershowers and rain, with possible flash floods, are likely over the Kunene, Omusati, Oshana, Otjozondjupa, Erongo, Khomas, and //Karas regions, including the northern coast.
