Mwanyangapo given a second chance after defeating cancer

CANCER survivor Lamech Mwanyangapo has taken a bold step in the fight against cancer in Namibia by establishing a foundation to assist those unable to help themselves.

Mwanyangapo was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2023, a life-changing moment in which he was told he had only seven weeks to live.

At the time, he explained, the cancer was spreading toward his brain, his bones were deteriorating, and every movement was life-threatening.

“However, God is glorious, and when it is not your time to perish, you will not die. Thus, the doctors developed a treatment plan. I was first put on a 30-day radiation program, which was followed by chemotherapy,” he said.

After the treatment plan was initiated, the tumour was completely destroyed, his bones began to recover, and he successfully underwent a bone marrow and stem cell transplant.

Mwanyangapo said that he left Windhoek for Cape Town in October last year as a cancer patient and returned home in January this year as a cancer survivor, giving praise to God for His miraculous work.

“This life-changing event prompted me to re-evaluate my life’s purpose and commit myself to making a difference in the lives of cancer patients,” he said.

He resolved to play a leading role in supporting and empowering those battling cancer through the Lamech Mwanyangapo Cancer Foundation.

Mwanyangapo emphasized that the Foundation is dedicated to giving those diagnosed with cancer a shoulder to lean on and helping them overcome the disease.

Moreover, he stressed that cancer is like any other disease and can be treated if diagnosed early. He encouraged everyone to go for regular check-ups.

He emphasized that anyone can be diagnosed with breast, cervical, or prostate cancer, underscoring the importance of checking one’s cancer status regularly.

This year, the campaign is being held under the theme: “Close the Care Gap: Everyone Deserves Access to Cancer Care.”
