THE Summit of Commonwealth Heads of State and Government, held in Apia, Samoa, from the 21st to the 26th of October, selected Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, as the organization’s new Secretary-General. She succeeds Patricia Janet Scotland, a British diplomat who has held the position since 2016.

President Nangolo Mbumba congratulated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her selection as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, expressing confidence that she will lead the organization brilliantly and elevate it to greater heights.
“In the same vein, on behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, I wish to thank the Right Honorable Patricia Scotland for the excellent leadership she provided to the Commonwealth during her tenure. I wish Rt Hon Scotland success in her future endeavours,” said President Mbumba.
Heads of State and Government from 56 countries attended the meeting under the theme: “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”
