THE Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism’s anti-poaching unit recently received 22 patrol vehicles and IT equipment to support wildlife protection services.

“The critical equipment we receive today—valued at approximately N$20 million—comes at a pivotal time for our conservation efforts. This consignment includes 21 4×4 off-road patrol vehicles, one Corolla Sedan, and IT equipment. With these additional patrol vehicles, we will be better positioned to ensure the mobility of our units, resulting in a reduced reaction time to incursions,” Pohamba Shifeta, the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, revealed.

He added that the IT equipment will enhance capabilities in handling administrative challenges related to wildlife protection and improve the monitoring and reporting of patrol efforts.

Shifeta revealed that the donated vehicles and equipment are part of the Integrated Wildlife Protection Management Project, funded by the German Government.

“This support could not have come at a more crucial moment. Despite our efforts in wildlife protection in recent years, we are still recording cases of rhino poaching. This year alone, we have tragically lost 46 rhinos (35 black and 11 white) to poaching in Etosha National Park,” he revealed.

Shifeta emphasised that the donated vehicles and equipment will therefore strengthen conservation and law enforcement efforts to bring the country closer to ensuring that no wild animal is illegally killed.

“I sincerely thank the German Government and KfW for their continued partnership. Together, we are making a lasting impact on conservation in Namibia. Your unwavering support enables us to protect our wildlife and preserve our national parks for future generations, and for this, we are truly grateful,” Shifeta added.
