A 33-YEAR-OLD man, identified as Xavier Francois Jantjies, died in a shack fire in Keetmanshoop on Saturday.
According to the police, the fire erupted around 04h48 at the VTC Campsite in Noordhoek, Keetmanshoop. It is alleged that the fire started in one shack and spread to others.
Jantjies was burnt beyond recognition, but his identity was confirmed, as he had been heard screaming for help but could not be saved due to the intensity of the flames.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. A total of five shacks were destroyed.
The police reported that most of the properties, including the corrugated iron sheets, were destroyed, with an estimated value of N$70,000.
The Keetmanshoop Fire Brigade and Police attended the scene, and the next of kin of the deceased have been informed.
