MINISTER of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has urged local authorities’ leaders to clean up their mess, warning that his patience is running out.
According to Uutoni, he is disappointed in some local authority councillors for not applying what they were taught during their induction for the betterment of their communities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of infrastructure services for the financial year 2023/24 on Wednesday, Uutoni said that local authorities’ leaders have been given induction on good governance and leadership.
However, Uutoni expressed concern that some councillors seem to have forgotten their training and are instead seen protesting alongside the public, demanding better services, rather than addressing the issues within their local authorities to serve the people who elected them.
“Who do you expect to solve the problems faced in your local authorities when you are creating the problem?” he asked.
He added that those causing havoc within their local authorities are now calling him to intervene, even though they are often at the forefront of protests. He emphasized that his patience is wearing thin.
Meanwhile, Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala said that their region is progressing well because there is no infighting within their local authorities.
“Despite having leadership from various political parties, we are doing well as a region in terms of service delivery and serving the community,” he said.
