THE Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Telio Communications Namibia to provide specialised telecommunication solutions for inmates.
According to the NCS, the Telio Telephone System is set to transform inmate communication by enhancing connectivity with families and legal representatives within a secure and monitored environment.
“Offenders must register vetted contact numbers, ensuring the integrity of the communication process. Additionally, airtime for the system can be conveniently purchased at any NamPost office, a vital partner in this initiative,” the NCS added.
The NCS explained that the Telio Telephone System was first introduced as a pilot project at the Windhoek Male Correctional Facility in November 2019 and has since been highly successful. Following its success, the NCS added, the system has been expanded to the Windhoek Female Correctional Facility, with plans to roll it out across all correctional facilities nationwide.
“This innovative system enhances communication for inmates while maintaining security. By recording calls and allowing only one-way communication, it effectively prevents potential misuse, such as inmates requesting prohibited items from family members,” the NCS said,
