Oshikoto governor highlights progress on water access challenges

Staff Reporter

THE Governor of the Oshikoto Region, Penda Ya Ndakolo, acknowledged the challenges the region faces regarding access to clean water but assured that the government is working to address these issues.

“The challenges regarding access to clean water in the Oshikoto Region, especially in the areas on the eastern side of Omuthiya, are well known. The problems are mainly low water pressure in pipelines and salty boreholes,” he said.

The governor made these remarks during the recent State of the Region Address for Oshikoto. However, he pointed out that despite the severity of the region’s water supply challenges, progress is being made to address the shortcomings.

“I am happy to report that significant steps are being taken to address these challenges. On the issue of low water pressure, the Ondangwa-Omutsegonime pipeline is currently being replaced and upgraded in order to increase water supply,” Ya Ndakolo said.

He revealed that approximately N$27 million has been allocated for the replacement and upgrading of the Ondangwa-Omutsegonime pipeline. In addition, he disclosed that a total of N$79.2 million has been budgeted for the Oshivelo-Omutsegonime pipeline, with the tender for borehole siting, drilling, and aquifer modelling expected to be advertised this year.

He emphasised that these are just some of the projects underway to improve the region’s water supply, highlighting the Namibian government’s commitment to resolving the region’s water challenges.
