DURING December, the Namibian police in the Oshana Region received several reports of criminals robbing or attempting to rob occupants of vehicles while queuing at traffic lights. Police community affairs officer Thomas Aiyambo said that the police received several reports from victims. He is, therefore, exhorting members of the public to beware of the new crime trend.
“There is a need to sensitize the public in that regard,” he said. He is warning drivers to lock the doors of their moving vehicles and to refrain from completely opening the windows. “Always use side mirrors to detect robbers’ movements,” he said.
Aiyambo shared a short message from an anonymous road-user who was allegedly targeted by robbers but managed to defend herself. She said that she was almost robbed “last night at around 19:30” while queuing at the traffic lights near the Game Complex when two men targeted her, but she did not panic and managed to protect herself.
Her advice: “Close your windows and lock yourself in the car, and if you have a gun, cock it and defend yourself.” She said that she was the only woman in the queue. “By the look of things,” she said, “the traffic lights robbers consider women as their target of preference.”
