President Geingob praised for commitment to democracy

Staff Reporter

THE United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee, recently commended President Hage Geingob for his unwavering commitment to upholding democracy and fostering peace within the country and across the continent.

She expressed this during a recent courtesy meeting with President Geingob, where she mentioned that the United States of America (USA) is currently undertaking substantial efforts to amplify the voices of Africans within multilateral institutions. She stressed the significance of this by highlighting that President Joe Biden perceives democracy to be facing threats.

“President Biden cares very deeply about democracy. He’s concerned that democracy is under threat at home in America, and he sees it under threat abroad. So we’re looking for ways to learn from those who are doing it well,” Phee said.

Furthermore, she praised the president for his endeavours in creating an inclusive nation.

“It’s nice to know how intentional you are, and that phrase ‘no one must feel left out’ seems to me to be key to political stability. When people feel left out, we see negative behaviours,” she said.

President Geingob acknowledged that the continent still confronts numerous challenges but underscored that the primary issue isn’t the challenges themselves, but rather the inability of some countries to self-correct. He emphasized that self-correction hinges on democratic processes, systems, and institutions.

The president also expressed concern about the lack of peace on the continent but highlighted that Africans are actively engaged in seeking solutions.

“Instead of developing our countries, we are destroying one another. But problem areas have reduced compared to the past. Military coups: the good thing about military coups is that we, Africans, decide – not Americans, not British telling us. When it comes to military coups, we are the ones to take action,” the president added.
