Uutoni tells Oshikuku to find proper landfill site

MINISTER of Urban and Rural Development Erastus Uutoni has urged the Uukambi Traditional Authority to assist the Oshikuku Town Council in finding land to relocate their landfill.

Uutoni made the urge recently, saying that the town is facing a serious challenge with a dumpsite being located in close proximity to the inhabitants.

He called on the traditional leaders in the municipality council to come up with a suitable landfill site.

“Because if the dumping site is among the residents, people will easily contract diseases,” he said.

He added that this might also result in children who live close to the dumpsite contracting diseases that are brought with the dumpsite.

Uutoni then appealed to the traditional leadership to assist the town’s leadership in ensuring that development needs are met.

Approached for comment, Oshikuku town spokesperson John Silos said that the dumpsite was located there when the town was small.

However, the town has now grown.

According to Silos, the Council is working on relocating it far from inhabited areas, and the cost has yet to be determined regarding how much it will cost the council to establish a new site.

“Council is still engaging with the traditional authority to identify a suitable site,” he said.

At the moment, he said that the Council does clean the current site to ensure that inhabitants’ health is not at risk.
