12 shacks burn down in Mondesa, Swakopmund

A fire broke out in the informal settlement of Mondesa in the coastal town of Swakopmund, resulting in the destruction of 12 shacks and leaving over 16 people homeless.

According to Inspector Ileni Shapumba of the Erongo Police, the fire incident occurred in Tulinawa, near the intersection of Monica Geingos and Stefanus Shipanga Streets at around 07:55.

It is alleged that the fire started on one property and quickly spread to two other properties, resulting in the destruction of 12 shacks. Fortunately, no loss of life or injuries were reported.

Shapumba added that approximately 16 victims, including 4 children, were affected by the fire and the resulting damage.

In addition to this incident, another fire was reported in the DRC informal settlement on Andimba Toivo Yatoivo Street. One shack was completely burned down, but no lives were lost.

According to the owner, he was cooking outside and briefly went to his neighbour’s house. When he returned, he noticed smoke coming from his place, and it was already engulfed in flames. He lives with his girlfriend and three children.

Local emergency service providers and members of the community forums responded to the incident.

Investigations are ongoing.
