NAMIBIA Economic Freedom Fighters’ (NEFF) Economic Commissar and businessman-turned-politician, Michael Amushelelo, will not be proceeding with his bail application that was scheduled to be heard in the Katutura Magistrate Court on Thursday morning.
This was confirmed by his lawyer, Kadhila Amoomo of the Kadhila Amoomo Legal Practitioners, who revealed that his client’s bail application is withdrawn.
Meanwhile, a bail application for his co-accused, activist Dimbulukeni Nauyoma, is proceeding in the Katutura Magistrate Court.
Amushelelo, Nauyoma and Parliamentarian Inna Hengari were arrested on 21 March this year after the court rejected their application through Amoomo, which sought an interdict on the police’s refusal to grant them permission to host a peaceful demonstration on Independence Day.
They were part of the group of protestors at the Katutura Youth Centre, who were told by the police to disperse in 5 minutes, and were subsequently detained for allegedly refusing to follow the police’s instruction.
Hengari was released on bail of N$5 000 last week Friday, while Amushelelo and Nauyoma withdrew their bail applications and were remanded in custody until their next court appearance, which took place yesterday (29 March 2023). During this appearance, the matter was again postponed to 27 April 2023 to allow police investigations to be completed.
The accused persons are charged with malicious damage to properties, inciting public violence, contravening the Public Gatherings Act and violating the court order.
