THE Ministry of Mines and Energy has confirmed that an earthquake was recorded approximately 184 kilometres South East of Lüderitz, just 41 km north of Rosh Pinah.
The earthquake is said to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 07 January 2023 at 06:48.
According to a press statement by the Ministry, the event was recorded by five seismic stations of the Namibian Seismology Network, namely Windhoek, Kamanjab, Karibib, Ariamsvlei and Aus.
It is further established that the earthquake registered a preliminary local magnitude (ML) of 3.3 as recorded by the Namibian Seismological Network at latitude (Y): -27.60° South, longitude (X): 16.81° East.
The earthquake was shallow at a depth of less than 15 kilometres.
The ministry further pointed out a few precautionary measures in case one feels an earthquake, adding that people must try to go outside safely when possible in the event that they happen to be indoors when it happens.
If outdoors, the public is encouraged to find a clear spot well clear of buildings, trees and power lines and they must watch out for falling objects.
