Shangula urges private sector to assist with strengthening of healthcare system

THE Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, urged corporate entities in Namibia to follow the example of Vivo Energy Namibia by assisting with the strengthening of Namibia’s healthcare system.

The minister said this during the handover ceremony of refurbished rooms in the Children’s Ward of the Katutura Intermediate Hospital, which was made possible by Vivo Energy Namibia.

“I call upon other corporate entities in Namibia to follow in the footsteps of Vivo Energy Namibia in assisting the Ministry of Health and Social Services to strengthen Namibia’s health system in order to provide universal access to quality healthcare services,” he said.

Shangula explained that Vivo Energy Namibia mobilised resources to refurbish the paediatric ward at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital and to provide a children’s playroom as well. He said that the donation of the playroom, in particular, will likely expand access to continued Early Childhood Development (ECD) for children who are admitted at the hospital. This, he added, will reduce the disruption of learning and development for hospitalised children.

“The donation we are celebrating today demonstrates, we all believe that every child ought to have access to outstanding health care, regardless of their backgrounds and circumstances,” Shangula said.

He added that the donation by Vivo Energy Namibia is also evidence of the strengthening relationship between the Namibian private sector and the Namibian government. This strengthening relationship, according to him, was also seen in the private sector’s response at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which he said enabled the government to save lives during a time when the healthcare system was tremendously overwhelmed.
