IN the light of increasing gender-based violence (GBV) which can be considered a silent epidemic in Namibia, the Teremoto Boxing and Fitness gym will host a first of its kind boxing bonanza aimed at creating awareness.
Teremoto chairperson Emvula Emvula said many people continue fighting their battle in silence, with no one to speak to, when they are violated by what they call their loved ones.
Hence the gym will host a boxing bonanza under the banner “A fist against GBV Bonanza” at the Ongwediva Multi-purpose Centre on 11 June.
Emvula said the event will address GBV through “one fist against GBV”, with dramas, poems and motivational activities lined up.
“Gender-based violence knows no borders. The killing of people has touched everyone and I saw a need to address the matter through the boxing bonanza and stop the violence through creating awareness in the society.”
Emvula said to achieve their goal they should focus on the younger generation by introducing comprehensive training on gender issues in the society they live in.
Emvula stated that the bonanza is not only about boxing, but ensuring that the message against GBV is heard across the country.
He said the event is hosted for the Oshana Region with all boxing clubs invited to participate and called on Namibians to support the initiative aimed at addressing GBV.
Established in 2022, the club has over 35 amateur boxers and two professional fighters under its wing, with the hope of growing its pool of boxers.
