RESIDENTS of the Hakhaseb settlement in Usakos successfully saved Ben Danakhoe Uiseb, a traditional headman and a member of the !Oe-#Gan Traditional Authority, after his car was outperformed by the strong Khan River.
Speaking to Informanté, town councillor Aleta Katiti Sem said due to the heavy flow of the river, community members were, however, unable to retrieve the car.
“They tried to remove the car but the water was too strong. However, it was later removed with a tractor. The headman is safe and no injuries were recorded” she added.
The Erongo police in the meantime issued a warning to communities in flood-prone areas such as Usakos, Karibib, Omaruru, Rooibank, Uis, Okambahe and Otjimbingwe to take precautions.
“While we applaud community leaders who are educating local communities in local languages about the danger of crossing waters in their respective areas, it appears that some of our community members are not heeding to the calls,” the police said.
This warning is extended countrywide as Namibia continues to receive good rains, with several rivers filled to capacity.
People should avoid crossing rivers or moving to close along riverbeds as this is extremely dangerous.
