THE Kunene region is still receiving consistent rainfall, with Outjo, Mopane Pos, Konop Pos, Sesfontein and Khorixas recording 37,8 mm, 34,4 mm, 23,9 mm, 4,7 mm and 0,4 mm of rain on Tuesday, according to the Namibia Meteorological Services.
On Tuesday, Gondwana Collection Namibia also reported that the “Kunene Region has been extremely lucky in that over the course of 4 days, Damara Mopane received 124 mm, of which 85 mm fell within 24 hours. Even Omarunga received a whopping 39 mm of rain over 2 days. Palmwag also received a total of 15mm over the course of 3 days”.
In comparison to other towns in the region, Khorixas recorded less rainfall on Tuesday morning.
Nonetheless, the town still received a considerable amount of rainfall over the last couple of days. Videos of cars wading through Khorixas’ flooded streets were shared on Facebook.
Sesfontein also received significant rainfall on Monday of 17,5 mm, according to Namibia Meteorological Services.
Facebook users shared photos of the thunderstorms and one cautioned that the D3707 road around the bridge between Sesfontein and Warmquella has been washed away due to the heavy rains.
Namibia Meteorological Services indicated that many of the northern areas also received significant rainfall, such as Namutoni, which recorded 41,5 mm and King Kaluma Village, in the Oshikoto region, recorded 10 mm of rainfall on Tuesday.
Halali, between Namutoni and Okaukuejo resort, recorded the most rain, namely 81,5 mm on Tuesday morning.
In the Ohangwena region, Oshikango recorded 37,6 mm of rain and Eenhana 11 mm. Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa region received 24,8 mm of rain on Tuesday and 4,6 mm of rain on Monday. Okahandja and Otjiwarongo also recorded 19,8 mm and 1,8 mm of rain on Tuesday.
In the Hardap region, Hohenfelde, Rehoboth, Aranos and Mariental recorded 21 mm, 13 mm, 7,6 mm, 4,5 mm and 1,6 mm of rain on Tuesday morning respectively.
This rainfall also impacted the water capacity of the southern dams. According to NamWater, the Hardap Dam stood at 71,2% on Tuesday morning and the Neckartal Dam stood at 104,03% with an overflow rate of 516,28 m³ per second.
According to Namibia Meteorological Services, widespread thundershowers will persist in the Central-North, Kunene and Erongo regions this week.
