THE directorate of education in the Oshana Region will construct a specialised computing school at Oshakati after they secured a donation of N$1.5 million from the Rani Group of Companies.
The company handed over the site to the government, through the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (MICT), during the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.
Minister of ICT Dr Peya Mushelenga said the School of Computing is developed uniquely to offer its learners a wide range of hands-on learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
“There is no better time to study computing, and there is no secondary school of computing in Namibia. This will be the first of its kind,” he said.
The minister noted that the government, through the Policy of Information Technology adopted in 2008, recognises the need to be part of the global information society and the crucial role of ICT in economic growth, industrial development, poverty eradication, equal opportunity and regional coordination.
“The Second Harambee Prosperity Plan, too, embraces the concept of industrialisation through ICT. This makes it imperative for computer science education to be expanded in schools,” he added.
Mushelenga said the school will have four classrooms, a storeroom and ablution facilities.
He said the donation will serve as the first phase of the Oshana Secondary School of Computing to move towards a digitalised world.
Mushelenga called upon all stakeholders and the business community, saying that education is a collective responsibility and they should join hands to give technical and financial aid to the Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture to complete the envisaged state of the art school.
