THE Omuthiya Town Council aims to raise funds for the construction of a community hostel to benefit learners without relatives in town and help protect vulnerable young girls.
The mayoral event is scheduled for Friday at Omuthiya in the Oshikoto Region.
The town’s mayor, Johannes Ndeutepo, said the funds will be used to construct a community hostel for learners that have no accommodation during school terms.
Many learners are forced to look for their own accommodation which often leads to girls falling pregnant due to some people taking advantage of the situation.
According to 2020 statistics provided by the education ministry, 277 young girls fell pregnant in the Oshikoto Region last year.
Ndeutepo said providing accommodation in the more secure environment of a hostel they will be able to address the issue and hopefully see a decline in these numbers.
He called on Namibians to support council in realising its dream of becoming a developed town.
“The money will also be used to start projects that will benefit the San community in the town,” he said.
Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is expected to officiate at the fundraising event.
