FMD jams traffic

FMD jams traffic

Niël Terblanché

TRAFFIC from the North is severely congested and backed up for several kilometres from the Oshivelo veterinary and police checkpoint as a result of measures aimed at preventing the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Thousands of people are stuck in a huge traffic jam as veterinary officials are busy disinfecting vehicles that are driving south. The disinfection of vehicles and their occupants is a mandatory action to prevent the spread of FMD south of the veterinary line.

The traffic jam starts to the south of Omuthiya and stretches for several kilometres all the way to the checkpoint at Oshivelo.

The head of the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said in a short statement with regard to the heavy congestion on the road from the North that special arrangements have been made to accommodate motorists that might be delayed on the road from the North although the COVID-19 curfew is still in place that.

“Those who arrive beyond curfew that starts at 22:00 will be allowed to finish their journeys but this arrangement should not be abused because extreme violation of curfew hours will not be tolerated and might still result in fines being issued at the various checkpoints,” Shikwambi said.

She said the Namibian Police is urging motorists to be patient and to always adhere to traffic regulations.
