OSHAKATI Town Council has embarked on cutting services to residents to recover outstanding debts owed to it.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kornelius Kapolo revealed this to Informanté, saying to-date council accumulated over N$ 60 million in unpaid water bills.
Kapolo stated that as of February 2020, the debt to the council was at N$48 million but in March last year-to-date the council recorded an additional debt of N$14 million alone.
“We are closing all accounts in arrears, be it private or public,” he said.

Kapolo noted that most of the debts owed to the council belong to the residents, rather than the business communities.
The Oshakati Town Council received N$132 000 as COVID-19 incentives from the ministry.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 last year, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development sent out a directive to all town councils to reconnect all accounts that were cut as a result of falling into arrears.
This was done with the purpose of curbing the further spread of COVID-19 and water is a basic need.
