THE Christian faithful, who frequent the Halleluiah Ministry’s parish at Ongwediva, turned up for the prayer and worship service as they do every Sunday.
No one, however, paid close attention to the nearby termite mound, but a visitor who joined them for the first time at the invitation of a friend, quickly scanned the surrounding and noticed what others did not: the wild edible mushrooms growing on the nearby termite mound amongst a growth of young mopane trees.
These wild mushrooms – known in Oshikwanyama as Omaova (plural) or Oova (singular) – are delicious and wildly popular. They can be cooked or grilled but are also eaten raw, mostly by young people who discover them while pasturing livestock or on the way to and from school.
