NAMIBIA’S Under-20 team made history when they assured themselves a very strong position in the finals when the TOTAL AFCON continental tournament in Mauritania swings around next year.
Despite having to bend the knee to Mozambique with a 1-0 defeat in the final of the COSAFA Qualifiers, the young Namibian still went further in the competition than ever before.
The young Namibians were unable to get a ball to the back of the Mozambican net and had to settle for second place in the series after their opponents managed a single goal at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Both teams had already qualified for the TOTAL U-20 AFCON, Mauritania 2021 by virtue of reaching the final, but there was plenty of desire to also lift the regional trophy for the first time.
In this instance, the honour befell the young team from Mozambique. It is the second time the Young Warriors from Namibia had to settle for the silver medal after losing to Zambia in the 2010 decider.
Namibia would have been maiden winners too, but Mozambique became just the fifth nation after Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar to take home the COSAFA Under-20 trophy.
The only goal of the match was scored by Dercio Augusto when his surgical free-kick hit the back of the Namibian net untouched by a single player.
Angola picked up the bronze medal for the third year in a row as they defeated defending champions Zambia 2-1.
For their troubles, the Young Warriors were handed the Fair Play prize.
