Fire kills and injures toddlers

Kauarive Komomungondo, a 23-month-old toddler died when he got trapped in a hut that burned to the ground in the Otjongombe Village in the Amenuis Reserve.

 

According to the incident report provided by the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police, the tragedy occurred at about 16:00 on Friday afternoon.

 

The little boy was left in the care of his grandparents because his mother had to travel to Onderombapa.

 

Later in the day the grandparents allegedly fell asleep in their homestead leaving the little boy playing outside.”

It is suspected that the toddler went into his mother’s homestead situated in the same yard where he is believed to have played with matches. In the process, he set fire to a curtain or some bedding which led to the hut burning down.

 

According to the incident report two men, who rode past on donkeys, saw the burning house and immediately ran to the grandparents to inform them of the hut that was on fire. The elderly people went outside but the fire was already out of control.

 

When police visited the scene to investigate, they found the burned remains of the little boy amongst the debris.

 

In a similar incident on Friday evening, the two-month-old Pehovelo Nghitukuohamba from Mondesa in Swakopmund sustained serious burn wounds when the bed he was left to sleep in, caught fire.

 

The baby boy was left sleeping in the bedroom while his parents were in the living room of the same ghetto.

 

According to the incident report, the parents reacted quickly and managed to extinguish the fire but the baby sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Swakopmund State hospital where he is currently admitted in a stable condition.

 

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the Namibian Police is still investigating the incident.

 

The 16-month-old Christof Nghiyalasha died from serious burn injuries after he pulled a pot of boiling water from a stove at his house in the Omapunda Village near Okankolo.

 

According to the incident report the boy was left to play while his mother was busy cooking in the kitchen. He was fatally injured when the pot of boiling water fell over onto him.

 

The tragic incident occurred at about 08:30 on Friday morning.
