Icy weather keeps Namibians indoors

Icy weather keeps Namibians indoors

Niël Terblanché

FROST covered surfaces and ice floating in containers with water left outside during the night greeted people living in central Namibia when they woke up on Thursday morning.

Residents of Windhoek, Rehoboth and Okahandja reported that temperatures dropped to well below 0 degrees Celsius during the night.

Temperatures as low as -6 degrees Celsius were measured in the residential areas of Kleine Kuppe and Avis while to the south of the capital farmers and residents of Rehoboth measured -4 degrees Celsius in places.

At Kapps Farm to the east of Windhoek one resident reported that the quicksilver dropped to -12 degrees Celsius.

Besides the cold residents of Okahandja had to navigate through thick mist that descended over the town and surrounding areas during the night.

In the south of Namibia winter rains continued at places like Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah. Soft continuous rain falling for a second consecutive day was also reported at Aussenkher along the Orange River.

The strong cold front that moved over the southern half of Namibia will dissipate towards the afternoon and slightly warmer weather can be expected over the next few days.
