A YOUNG 13-year-old Portuguese speaking girl, who was found walking alone along the road between Oshakati and Omungwelume a week ago, revealed that child slavery is still alive and well in the Oshana Region.
According to the report about the human trafficking incident provided by the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police, the young girl’s harrowing tale came to light after she was discovered walking back to Angola on 22 October by a resident of the area.
The girl was taken to the Omungwelume Police Station shortly after she was found walking between the two towns. She was later taken to immigration officials at Oshikango.
Only with the help of an interpreter was it discovered that the girl hails from Lobito in Angola. She told officials that her mother passed away earlier this year and that a woman she did not know at the time brought her from her home in Angola to Oshakati during July this year.

According to the report the girl escaped from the woman’s house and decided to walk back to her home in Angola and that is how she was found by the member of the public.
