ONE child and two adults were killed instantly when the minibus they were travelling in crashed into the back of a truck on the road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Spokesperson for the Namibian Police in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maurene Mbeha, confirmed the deaths of the three accident victims and said the driver of the minibus was one of the people that died on the scene of the crash.
Inspector Mbeha said the initial investigation into the fatal crash that occurred at about 00:11 approximately 30 kilometres outside Otavi, indicates that the driver of the minibus attempted to overtake a slower moving heavy transport truck but he allegedly swerved back into his lane after observing and oncoming vehicle approaching fast.
“The bus driver attempted to squeeze back in behind the truck but unfortunately the minibus crashed into the back of the truck which caused the death of the three people.”
Inspector Mbeha said some of the other passengers on the minibus sustained critical injuries.
“The bus had a total of 27 occupants and most of the people only suffered less severe injuries. All were transported to the hospital at Otjiwarongo for further medical care.”
She said the names of the deceased persons will be made available at a later stage and added the driver of the truck escaped the crash unhurt.
