A RELENTLESS hunt for members of an armed robbery gang that terrorised tourists in Kamanjab last Thursday saw the arrest of a second suspect late on Sunday.
The second arrest came as a result of excellent cooperation between the Namibian Police and the Kamanjab District Watch after a South African couple on a visit to Namibia was robbed after they were assaulted with rocks and a spade at a campsite on the outskirts of Kamanjab.
According to the report about the incident provided by the Police Public Relations Division the robbers first went to Ann’s Campsite where they broke into a tourist vehicle and stole several valuable items which included an i-Pad, camera, lenses, a pair of binoculars, a first aid kit and bags with a total estimated value of N$49 000.

A short while later, the same gang of three men gained entrance to the Porcupine Rest Camp and at about 22:30 started attacking the South African visitors in their tent.
The visitors were assaulted with rocks and a spade and while incapacitated their wedding rings were plucked from their fingers. The robbers also grabbed other items of value that includes an i-Phone, spectacles, a satellite phone, camera, a torch, a watch, several camera accessories such as memory cards and lenses and N$1 300 in cash. The value of the stolen items are estimated to be N$85 100.
After the police and the district watch was alerted of the robbery and the theft from the two campsites, a team of officers followed the tracks of the robbers and found the first suspect on Friday morning 35 kilometres from Kamanjab.
The relentless search continued which lead to the arrest of the second suspect on Sunday and according to a member of the Kamanjab District Watch the third suspect is known to police and an arrest will be made soon.
The first two suspects were remanded in custody after they made their first appearance in the Outjo Magistrate’s Court on Monday and although not officially confirmed the robbers were also charged with attempted murder besides the robbery and theft charges they already face.
