THE Henties Bay mother of a one-and-a-half-year-old baby boy, the 28-year-old Ruth Noabes who filmed herself while she was abusing and smothering the child, made her first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s court earlier on Monday.
Noabes, a mother of two other children besides the baby boy, was arrested over the weekend at the coastal town after she sent the video she made to the father of the child who decided a while ago to end his relationship with her. The Namibian Police was alerted to the abuse and Noabes was arrested while her children were placed in the care of a safe harbour.

At the start of the court proceedings Noabes indicated that she wants to enter a guilty plea but the presiding magistrate, Conchita Olivier, informed the ac2cused person that it would not be possible due the seriousness of the charges she faces. Noabes was informed that she faces a count of attempted murder as a count of assault read with the prevention of Domestic Violence Act.
Noabes initially indicated that she wants to conduct her own trial but after she was informed about the seriousness of the charges against her, she opted to apply for the services of a state sponsored lawyer to enter her plea at the appropriate time.
The prosecutor in the matter informed the Court that the state opposes bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence, that it would not be in the interest of justice because of the public outcry about the incident after the video has started to spread on social media platforms and because it would not be in the interest of the public and the accused person herself, because she might face violent reprisal from the community.
Magistrate Olivier ordered that that the accused person approach the prosecutor to obtain the necessary paperwork to apply for Legal Aid. She also informed the accused person that the police will need more time to investigate the matter before remanding Noabes in custody until 24 September.
