Retired teacher and founding Helao Nafidi councillor dies at 84

Placido Hilukilwa

IMMANUEL Hainghumbi, a respected elder of the Onaame/Okatope community, retired teacher, former pastor and one of the founding councillors of Helao Nafidi Town in the Ohangwena Region, has died aged 84.

It is said that as a Bible Studies teacher at Ponhofi Senior Secondary School in the 1980s, he engaged in political sensitisation of students, attracting the attention of the security forces.

The resultant constant harassment eventually forced him to go into exile in Angola with his family in 1988.

Upon arrival at Xangongo in southern Cunene Province of Angola, he donated his vehicle to the liberation movement. Now painted in SWAPO colours, the vehicle is still visible during election campaigns.

After independence, Hainghumbi resumed his teaching career until his retirement 22 years ago.

His memorial service is scheduled to take place at his residence in Onaame village on Friday. The funeral service will be held at the ELCIN Parish at Okatope, followed by burial in the local cemetery on Saturday.
