THE Outapi Town Council has concluded the third edition of its Mayoral Cup Tournament, held from 4 to 6 September at the Olufuko Cultural Centre.
The event brought together athletes, community members and spectators from across the region and the country, with the aim of driving community development, social unity and economic growth through sport.
This year’s tournament featured three disciplines: Youth Soccer, with 23 teams; Legends Soccer, with eight teams; and Netball, with nine teams.
The tournament was officially opened by Regional Governor Immanuel Shikongo, who highlighted the role of sport in fostering social cohesion, youth empowerment and public health.
Also in attendance was Regional Police Commander Ismael Basson, underscoring the link between community sport and public safety.
Outapi Mayor Victorina Neingo was present throughout the weekend, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to youth development and positioning Outapi as a competitive regional sporting hub.
Eleven Champions won the Legends Soccer category and received N$20,000 in prize money. They were followed by Okahao Masters in second place, who received N$15,000, and Ondangwa Masters in third place, who received N$10,000.
Eewa Tuu Senior won the Youth Soccer category and received N$30,000, followed by Onambula United (N$20,000) and Outapi Town Council (N$10,000).
The Netball winners were VERL Dreamers (N$10,000), Runs United (N$8,000) and Helba NC (N$6,000).
Council spokesperson Joolokeni Haidula said that, beyond the competition, the three-day event provided a significant boost to the local economy by creating market opportunities for informal traders, entrepreneurs and small businesses across the Omusati Region.
“The seamless execution of an event of this magnitude was made possible by the unwavering commitment, tireless effort and meticulous planning of the Outapi Mayoral Cup Preparatory Committee,” Haidula said, extending the Council’s “heartfelt gratitude” to members whose work ensured a flawless and memorable tournament.
She added that the event benefited from strong turnout during the school holiday period and showcased “exceptional discipline and sportsmanship from both competitors and spectators”.
“The Council also extends sincere appreciation to all participating teams, technical officials, local vendors, sponsors and law enforcement personnel who contributed to a safe, family-friendly event,” she said.
Haidula further revealed that planning for the 2027 edition is already underway, with the Council committed to expanding the tournament’s reach and impact.
