CHULA CHULA FC were crowned champions of the First Gentleman Lieutenant General (Rtd) Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah Annual Sports Tournament after defeating DT Meds on penalties in a thrilling final in Okongo, Ohangwena Region.
The three-day tournament, which ran from 20 to 23 August, brought together about 23 teams competing in youth and legends football, netball and volleyball, with thousands of Namibian dollars in prize money on offer.
The football final at the Elia Weyulu Sports Field ended 1-1 after regulation time before Chula Chula prevailed in the penalty shootout to lift the trophy and receive gold medals.
DT Meds finished runners-up, while Rundu Chiefs secured third place.
In netball, Namibia Correctional Services (NCS) defeated Tiger Warriors 25-17 to claim the title. Runs United finished third.
NCS also won the volleyball competition, followed by Mighty Gunners in second place and City Warriors in third.
Chula Chula received N$45,000 for winning the football competition, while DT Meds received N$33,000 and Rundu Chiefs N$15,000.
NCS received N$15,000 for winning both the volleyball and netball competitions, while Tiger Warriors received N$10,500 for finishing second in netball.
The tournament was attended by First Gentleman General Denga Ndaitwah, Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus and Gender, Equality and Social Welfare Minister Emma Kantema-Gaomas.
Speaking after the tournament, Ndaitwah said the event had gone well and thanked Huawei Technology, which has committed to sponsoring the tournament for the next two years.
“The event went very, very well. We were so much entertained,” Ndaitwah said.
He said Huawei’s continued financial support would help ensure the tournament grows in the coming years.
Theofelus, meanwhile, encouraged young people and businesses to use the tournament as an opportunity to participate in sports and generate income.
She urged people to participate, showcase their talents and set up stalls during the tournament.
“There’s an opportunity to enhance sports development in the country,” Theofelus said.
