National Council members raise over N$27 000 in support of Cuba

THE 42 Members of the National Council have collected and handed over N$27 609.00 to the Namibia–Cuba Solidarity Campaign.

National Council Chairperson Lukas Sinimbo Muha said the contribution was made personally by the members from their own pockets. He explained that the funds are intended to support Cuba as it faces ongoing challenges, including the impact of the economic embargo, which continues to place significant pressure on the Cuban people.

“This contribution is modest when measured against the challenges facing Cuba. However, its significance lies not in its monetary value alone, but in the spirit in which it is given. It represents our recognition of Cuba’s contribution to our own history. It represents our appreciation for the friendship that has endured between our two nations. And it represents our belief that solidarity is a responsibility that must be lived and demonstrated through action. The contribution is therefore made with humility, appreciation and genuine goodwill towards the people of Cuba,” Muha said.

He emphasised that the relationship between Namibia and Cuba was forged through a shared history of solidarity, sacrifice and a commitment to freedom and human dignity. According to Muha, the ties between the two countries extend beyond diplomatic relations, with their friendship deeply rooted in their shared history.

“One cannot narrate the history of Namibia’s liberation without acknowledging the significant role played by the people and Government of Cuba. During Namibia’s darkest period under colonial rule, Cuba stood in solidarity with the Namibian people. They paid the ultimate price, losing their lives in support of our liberation struggle. Cuba also provided material assistance, including food and ammunition, to those fighting for Namibia’s freedom.  These sacrifices form part of the historical contribution that helped create the conditions that ultimately enabled Namibia to attain her independence,” Muha said.

Muha further highlighted Cuba’s continued contribution to Namibia’s development, particularly through capacity-building opportunities for Namibian youth in the health and education sectors.

“As we speak, we have Namibians that are studying in Cuba.   We therefore recognize Cuba not only for what they did for Namibia during the liberation struggle, but also for what it has continued to do in support of our development,” Muha said.
