Nujoma joins firefighters as Ongos veld fire brought under control

KHOMAS Regional Governor Sam Nujoma joined City of Windhoek firefighters on the ground at Farm Augeihas as crews continued efforts to contain a veld fire in the Ongos area, which has largely been brought under control.

The City of Windhoek’s Emergency Services resumed firefighting operations earlier and reported significant progress in containing the fire.

Most of the fire has been contained, while firefighters continue to monitor and extinguish remaining hotspots. The fire currently poses no threat to properties or the city.

Firefighters are also creating firebreaks to prevent the fire from spreading across the C28 road.

Nujoma joined the firefighters on site and assisted the team in the effort to bring the veld fire under control. He commended the Fire Brigade for its work and highlighted the importance of fire prevention and education in communities.

He also handed over a donation to support the City of Windhoek Fire Brigade, describing it as a gesture of appreciation for firefighters who work on the frontline to protect communities.

“We recognise the demanding and often dangerous work carried out by our firefighters. This contribution is a token of our continued commitment to strengthening emergency response capacity across Khomas,” Nujoma said.

He called on the private sector, civil society and residents of the Khomas Region to support the Fire Brigade through contributions such as personal protective equipment, firefighting equipment, refreshments or financial assistance.

The City said firebreaks and cutlines maintained around Windhoek and surrounding farms had helped slow and contain the spread of the fire by removing excess grass that could serve as fuel.

It emphasised the importance of prevention, preparation and swift response in protecting lives, livestock and property.

The City expressed appreciation to farmers, the Namibia Defence Force, Nujoma and Shoprite for their assistance, including providing refreshments to firefighters and emergency personnel.

The City said there was no cause for alarm at this stage but would continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary.

Residents requiring fire or emergency assistance can contact the City of Windhoek Fire Brigade on 061 211 111.
